Send texts, pictures, and files between computers with a shared box
A shared box is used by your computers, or by you and a friend. What you put on it goes from one computer to the other, encrypted end to end, with no account.
01How it works
What you put in the box, a text, a picture, a screenshot, a recording, or any file, shows on every computer in the box at once. Share only what you may pass on: your own files, and media you are authorized to share with the people in the box. It travels straight from one computer to the other, over your network or the internet; only when the two cannot reach each other does it pass through Cloudflare's relay, still encrypted. The ClipHearth server only introduces the computers to each other and never sees the content: it is encrypted with a key that only your computers know, and so are the names of the files and even the box's ID. Both computers need to be on; ClipHearth runs in the tray and starts with the computer, so they usually are, and an item put in the box while the other computer is off goes as soon as it is on. Everything stays on each computer until you delete it there.
02Create a shared box
Open Shared box, the section under Share, and press New or join. Under CREATE A SHARED BOX, choose a BOX ID (for example novak-home: 3 to 40 letters, digits, hyphens, underscores, or dots) and a PASSWORD of at least 8 characters, typed twice (the password is what keeps others out of the box, so make it one nobody could guess, for example a few unrelated words), then pick how long to KEEP THE BOX: Until deleted, 1 day, 7 days, or 30 days. Create the box (or Enter) makes it. Creating a shared box needs a licence, and a licence can hold up to 3 shared boxes; a shared box nobody has used for half a year is deleted.
03Join from the other computer
On the other computer, open Shared box › New or join and type the same ID and password under JOIN A SHARED BOX, then press Join the box. Joining is free, also in the trial, so the person you share with needs no licence. Invite by e-mail… writes an e-mail in your mail program with the ID and how to join; tell the password another way. Ten wrong passwords within an hour lock the box for an hour, so guessing one does not work.
04Put something in the box
Write in the box at the bottom, paste a picture or files with Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac), or drop files into the box, then press Send or Enter (Shift+Enter starts a new line). Screenshots have Send on the small picture in the corner and in their list, every file in Completed has it too, and the tray icon's menu has Put the clipboard in the shared box. Items show as bubbles, yours on the right, and Show all opens a long text in full.
05What arrives, and where
Texts and pictures always come by themselves. Larger files wait for Get unless you raise GET FILES BY ITSELF UP TO to 100 MB, 500 MB, 2 GB, or Any size. WHEN SOMETHING ARRIVES can show a notice, and RECEIVED FILES GO TO is the folder they are saved in, with Open the folder next to it. The COMPUTERS card lists every computer in the box and how it is connected: over your local network, over the internet, or, only when neither works, through a relay that passes the encrypted data on without being able to read it. If Windows Firewall blocks a computer on your own network, the box offers Allow on the local network; Windows asks for an administrator once.
06Remove a computer, change the password, leave, delete
Under THIS BOX, Remove takes a computer out of the box; it could join again with the password, so change the password first if it should not. Change the password… keeps the computers already in the box and asks new ones for the new password. Leave the box takes this computer out; what arrived stays where it is and the other computers keep the box. Delete the box… removes it for every computer, after you type the password; each computer keeps what it received.
