Put music under a video, or replace its sound
Add a sound file to a video: under the original sound, like music under speech, or in its place, like a new voice-over. ClipHearth tells you what happens when the lengths differ.
01Choose the sound file
Open the video in the Editor. In the first step, Sound, the ADD A SOUND FILE card has Choose...; the line under it shows the file's name, length, and kind. The cross takes it out again.
02Under the sound, or instead of it
With Mix it under the original sound off, the added file replaces the video's sound. Tick it and the file plays under the original, which is what you want for music under speech.
03Set the two volumes
ITS VOLUME sets the added file, from 0 to 300 %; when you switch mixing on, it drops to 30 % unless you have set it yourself, and under speech 20 to 40 % is usual. The video's own sound keeps its VOLUME slider in the SOUND TRACK card above.
04When the lengths differ
If the sound is longer than the picture, choose Cut the sound where the file ends or Hold the last frame until the sound ends. If it is shorter: Silence after the sound ends, Repeat the sound until the end, or End the file with the sound. A sentence under the choice says what will happen, and FADE OUT AT THE CUT (2 seconds to start with) softens the end of a sound that is cut short.
05What changes with it
Even out the loudness and the fades apply to the mixed result. When the sound is replaced, Remove silence and Reduce background noise switch off, since they work on the original sound, and subtitle tracks are dropped because they would describe speech that is gone.
06Export, or use it for a join
Review & export lists the sound as mixed in or replaced, with the volume. Export to Queue writes a new file. Join Multiple Clips has the same card in its Sound & picture step, for a sound track under all the clips.
