Update ClipHearth
How an update arrives, what the update window shows, and what to do when it does not go through.
01When ClipHearth finds an update
ClipHearth looks for a new version at start and every few hours while it runs, also when its window is closed and it sits in the tray. A new version shows in Updates and as a system notification. Nothing is installed until you press Update now. Only a package signed by ClipHearth's publisher is accepted, and that is checked before anything is written.
02One window from the download to Start
After Update now, ClipHearth asks about downloads, recordings, or screenshots that are still running, and then one window shows the whole update: the download with its share, the preparation, closing ClipHearth, the installation and the check. At the end it says ClipHearth <version> is ready; Start opens the new version and the window closes. Closing the window while it downloads cancels the update and changes nothing. Before the download, ClipHearth checks that the disk has room for it.
03What an update touches
An update replaces only ClipHearth's own files. Anything else in its folder stays exactly as it was. On Windows the files are swapped all at once, on a Mac the old and the new version change places in one step, so an interrupted update cannot leave a mix of versions or a missing app. If an update is interrupted anyway, the next one first puts everything back as it was.
04Windows, macOS, Linux
On Windows, ClipHearth installs for your account only, so an update never asks for an administrator; only a copy installed for everyone on the computer asks once, in front of the update window. On a Mac, nothing is asked. On Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint, the .deb package updates through the system's own software service, the same way the system's own updates work, and asks for a password only where your system requires one. If a system upgrade switched the ClipHearth package source off, Updates says so and tells you where to switch it back on.
05If an update cannot be installed
ClipHearth says what went wrong. When it cannot install on this computer, the next start offers Later, so you keep working with the version you have, and the update waits in Updates. Pages sent from the browser extension while ClipHearth updates are not taken: the update window tells you, so you can send the page again once ClipHearth is back.
